Coliseum is a suite of four images of individual empty cockfighting rings; an arena where this blood sport has been practiced for centuries. Although many countries have outlawed the activity, it remains legal in Colombia, South America, where these images were taken. Rather than depicting the birds, their owners, and a cheering audience, it is the absence of them, which leaves the image of a silent, miniature coliseum. Their vernacular architecture and cheerful color contrast with their intended function, although the energy of the animal combatants—their brutality and death—continue and remain.
